Hi, Tumblr. This is a thank you.
fishingboatproceeds:
I just found out that The Fault in Our Stars will be #1 on the New York Times bestseller list for the SEVENTH consecutive week.
This is ridiculously wonderful news, and I could never have imagined my book would have this kind of life (particularly given that none of my previous books has been anywhere on the bestseller list for even half this long).
I just want to say...

since thou talkest of genderbent things can we talk about genderbent bare. it would be so interesting aaaahhh and the whole thing would have to be inverted, sort of, because the if we’re talking stereotypes (as bare is talking), they would be backwards — like, no one would bat an eye if girl!peter was like, “oh my god wicked is totally amazing!!!”* and at the same time,...

Arq: text posts don't seem to work on this kindle I borrowed from
My mobile web dev class but I have an hour and a half to kill so I'm making a chat post so I can talk. About chess. The musical. Ive been thinking about what makes a good version of chess to me.
Obviously the music is at times incredible and that's what draws most people in first but there is value in the story too (not that its easy to say chess has a singular story considering the plot has been rewritten so many times, the bway and London versions alone are very different... I made a chart comparing the song order of some major versions, its in my chess tag) . I'm listening to the Swedish cast recording right now and its very interesting for several reasons but I find its most defining feature is that it throws out a lot of the focus on cold war politics and blackmail that often made earlier productions a little hard to follow or seemingly melodramatic and instead really centers on the love triangle(s?). There is something refreshing about this (I think there were rumors of a byway revival based on this plot but since the popular royal Albert hall concert used the London plot I don't imagine that would happen now) but I cant help but feel like its missing a certain chessness.
When I think about it I feel like the love story in chess has never been very well developed and though that's probably not a point in its favor, I think its clear that to me at least, the story's real value is not so much in anatoly and Florence 's affair that anything else should take too much of a backseat to it. I think the most interesting thing chess has to say are about things like nationalism. In the era of rocky movies chess gave us a musical set against the backdrop of an America vs the soviets sports match subject to a media frenzy-- in the original concept album its chess player protagonists aren't given names, they're just 'the American ' and 'the Russian ' which is ironic because I think the musical teaches us how wrong we are to define these men too exclusively by those characteristics and forget to imagine them complexly (which the characters themselves also fail at a lot, especially Freddie who in act one often talks about anatoly sergievsky as though he IS Russia) . Its a musical about a chess game, where its all black and white, by the rules and in the end there is a winner and a loser. In the musical chess none of these things are true. I love that about it.
Now I have to get to class. Forgive my questionable kindle typing.

Are there people who really have successfully done the MapCrunch airport game without using outside sources? Because that is insane. Last night it took me hours to get to the airport in Dresden, Germany even after I had Google Maps directions to the airport. (I ran into a couple places that had missing Street View data so I had to figure out ways around them.)

It turns out there’s actually no street view info for any of the roads leading to this airport in Romania.
So it is actually impossible for me to win this one.
