A few of my favorite Reddit IAMAs
I got into Reddit because Patta started showing me IAMAs that were relevant to my interests. r/IAMA is basically a section of Reddit where people can post something interesting about themselves and let Reddit users ask them questions about it. Just for fun, here’s a list of some of my favorites I’ve read (and a couple quotes from each, first three words link to source post):
- IAm K.A. Applegate, author of Animorphs and many other books. AMA
”And for 15 years the hardcore fans have kept it all alive, kept writing and drawing, and best of all felt things they might not otherwise have felt, and thought things they might not otherwise have felt, and the effect went both ways. You guys affected us as much as we did you.”
”We’ve both always accepted the necessity of war in some circumstances, and accepted that it’s a pretty fucking awful thing to put our young men and women through. What we wanted to say was that there would be times it would be necessary, that some soldiers would find joy in it (Rachel,) some would find a sort of addiction (Jake,) some would hate it but do their best, (Cassie,) some would sail right through, (Marco,) and others would be the victims left behind, (Tobias.)” - IAmA New York Times bestselling novelist. AMA. (John Green)
”There’s also a lot of interesting creative potential in ereaders, although no one has done much with it yet. You’ve got a searchable text with the ability to support nontextual content; that could really reshape the way we imagine what it means to read a book in all kinds of exciting (or terrifying, depending on your perspective) ways.”
”Re. adult readers: I’m really lucky that all of my books have been bought and read by adult readers, which is nice, because adult readers are much more likely to buy hardcovers. :) That said, I’m not really interested in publishing for that market; it’s crowded and cut-throat, and I really like my readers. I am continually kind of overwhelmed by the sophistication and intelligence of teen readers, and they tend to be less jaded about stories than the rest of us.” - IAmA 74-time Jeopardy! champion, Ken Jennings. I will not be answering in the form of a question.
”Old people can’t keep their dry, lilac-scented hands off me. Man, do old people ever love Jeopardy. I can’t go anywhere in public where there might be old people, like Hallmark stores or cemeteries.”
”I have told this story before, but the security on the show is pretty intense. I totally caused a CTU-like “shutdown” one time by changing my necktie using the wrong mirror—the same one Trebek uses. No contestants allowed back there!
I thought it was pretty funny at the time, except for all the crew members who probably got fired over it.” - I’m CNN News Anchor Don Lemon AMA
“I was totally stunned by the Jon Stewart segment. I was watching the show with a friend and was tweeting about the prior segments. Then mine came on and we both said in unison, “uh oh.” Then I tweet ‘OMG’ and walked out of the room.. My friend said come back, watch it. I didn’t for about an hour and after I had 2 beers. Then once I watched I thought it was funny and complimentary.”
“Know that you’re not alone. Come out of the closet when you feel comfortable and safe. But know that it’s never an easy thing to do at first. Then when you do it you’ll wonder why you hadn’t sooner.” - I am a 20 year-old comedian and redditor. My name is Bo Burnham. AMA
“Yeah [Youtube Live] was a bit awkward. I had no idea the camera was on me — but it zooms out as she’s talking and I’m just hanging my head in shame. The whole Youtube Live thing seemed to betray the heart of Youtube IMO.”
“Both of those personas — the socially awkward kid and the self-assured “artist” — were choices. I was very bored with the first when I started to do the latter. I’m almost never myself on stage. I’ve always favored theatrical comedy over personal comedy.” - IAm Francesca Marie Smith, and I was the voice of Helga on “Hey Arnold!” AMA. :)
“All the actors recorded together as much as possible; this way of doing things wasn’t all that common in my experience in voice-over work (I’d say maybe half the shows I did recorded this way?), but I felt it made a huge difference.”
“I should also note that I’m super interested in fan practices (that’s one of the big things my USC advisor, Henry Jenkins, studies…he did a lot of work with Star Trek fandoms, and now focuses on Harry Potter). So, really, things like fanart and even this IAmA are fascinating research projects for me! :)”
