I love The Spring Standards, but today I’ve been revisiting the band’s four-member history as Old Springs Pike and reminiscing about all the great songs they had that haven’t been played by John or TSS since (on a side note, especially my favorite, “What-If Waltz”, which OSP/TSSĀ didrearrange and continued to play for a bit after John left but now haven’t touched in years as far as I can tell).
I don’t know how like… appropriate it’s considered to post videos of Old Springs Pike that have since been taken down by the former band members, but I’m going to risk it because I’d really like to share this one. I became curious about Old Springs Pike after Gallagher mentioned it in an interview, and I can remember searching them on YouTube with honestly low expectations. This was the first video I clicked on and I was blown. away. I liked them immediately, and I was so pleasantly surprised to see that it wasn’t “John Gallagher Jr’s band” but rather he was only a part of what was clearly a very talented group of people who were all pulling their weight.
I ended up clicking on the first part of the Rockwood concert after this, just out of curiosity… and then somehow the next thing I knew I’d watched the whole concert and was disappointed that there wasn’t more when it was over. They were THAT good. I’ve been in love with them all since. I firmly believe that someday, someday I will get the chance to see The Spring Standards (that is, OSP sans John) or John live in concert. (Thus far the closest TSS has come is Chicago, and though I’m willing to go that far for Spring Awakening I’m still holding out hope that TSS will come closer.)
If you’re still mourning John Gallagher Jr leaving Old Springs Pike, don’t click here :P
I was on an OSP kick this morning. I’m a bit of a sucker for a capella so I love At Least Affection. This one has got to be in my top three favorite performances of it.
